I was at a bridal show last month when I was approached by a young lady who told me she was interested in a natural light photographer. She said she liked the look of natural light in photos she had seen online. First things first, all light is natural, whether it comes from the sun, a lamp, a video light, or a flash. ALL LIGHT IS NATURAL! So when a photographer sells you on the fact that they are a natural light photographer well…of course they are! They are throwing that term at a couple as a sales pitch because everyday people who are not professional photographers do not fully understand the concept of good lighting. Actually you should be offended as they are selling you on the assumption that you are ignorant when it comes to lighting! I’m here to change this!
All photographers enjoy great ambient lighting. The great ones will emphasize it! Let me give you an example: I showed the same young lady a photograph of a couple that was beautifully back lit by the setting sun and she was so excited of how the “Natural Light” looked in the photo. “Yes that is exactly what I like” she said! Then I explained to her that just off camera right was a large softbox and a flash and there was no other way to achieve this look! World renowned wedding photographer Roberto Valenzuela said it best, “Even the best Ambient light can be enhanced. Enhanced ambient lighting is like a taco with hot sauce. Without the enhancement then its just like a plain taco….I prefer the taco with the hot sauce!” What he tries to explain is that any average photographer can sit someone in front of a window and get decent photos. The professional artist is going to reach for more….much more! Artist like Jerry Ghionis, Roberto Valenzuela, Baris Varol and others understand this and this is what separates them from the average. This is what separates us from the average.
